SP5 : the new Map control

I'm just playing with the new X3 SP5 release.   The new MAP control should be really useful for me - but I can't make it do anything.  When placed on a measurement screen the control just shows "Graphics Device is not initialised!" in orange letters .. with no info as to what needs initialising.

Are there some instructions for this very useful feature please?

Any ideas what I need to do?

Hi,

it is possible the problem occurs because of the graphic card.

Could you please send us the model of the garphic card that you are using?

If possible you can also send us the map logs which can be found here:

%localAPPDATA%\Map

%localAPPDATA%\Map64

Hi, I have installed X3 SP5 on two of my PCs with exactly the same result ("Graphics Device is not initialised!" and no response from the control)

  1. a (rather old) dell dimension 9200 running win7 x64 and with a GeForce 7900 GS graphics card
  2. a Panasonic Toughbook CF-53 running win10 pro and with integrated (intel) graphics

The \Map64 log files from the Dell 9200 are attached; I didn't find any \Map directory.

After my last post. I did a COMPLETE installation (ie all available add-ons etc including winVNC) on an office laptop (dell e7270). On starting the control, the same message arrived - then went away and the control started to work (though I have yet to make it connect to a tile server).

Did I miss an essential add-on in the installation on the other PCs? What are the dependencies of the map control?

A full install of dewesoft X3 SP5 on three different PCs has yielded one installation in which the control starts (in the other two it reports "graphics device is not initialised"). Within the apparently working installation, the control does not seem to access the map server and frequently crashes dewesoft. I just have to conclude that this control is not really ready for use yet. Do any other users have it working? If so, under what installation conditions and using what map server? Thanks.

Hi,

we have checked the graphic card GeForce 7900 GS but it doesn't support the OpenGL 4.0 which is required to run the new map visual control.

Since this is a desktop, do you have a chance to upgrade the GPU?

OK! So the office desktop only has OpenGL 2.3. The toughbook I use for on site data acquisition only has OpenGL 3.3. But my Dell M4600 precision workstation has a NVidia Quadro 1000M that supports OpenGL 4.5, so I installed SP5 on that.

SHE LIVES!

The map control now works and I can even upload map tiles from the built in server address (http://193.77.237.81:5998). I had no luck connecting to any other tile server or WMS server though. Any suggestions? What do people use?

NB: being able to plot a quantity against GPS position (eg maximum voltage seen by the test train) is just fanstastic - something I had to do offline in Matlab before.

Since map visual control caches images data to hard drive it is not allowed to use online WMS/Tileservers for which you don't have license to use offline. For now the only tile server that we are officially offering is "OpenStreetMap" layer, which is hosted on our server. We are preparing also low resolution satellite image layer which you will be able to use for aerospace applications (resolution is not good enough for automotive applications). If you have some high resolution georeferenced images (of your test polygon for example) you can use those as separate layer.
