Hi,

Will there be a possibility to install different versions of DEWESoftX on the same computer in the future? I like the frequent updates with continuous improvements of the software, but I am hesitant in switching without verifying compatibility. As of today I have to install a new version, test for a few hours, uninstall everything DEWESoft related, install the previous version for proper measurements, then repeat the installation of the newest version for testing and so on.

How do you other users handle this? A separate computer for testing new software versions or just jumping and hoping for the best?

Dear Benjamin,

I would suggest you that you retain Bin64 folder before you update to the newer DewesoftX version. What you have to do is simply duplicate the Bin64 folder and name it 2023.5 for example. Then perform a regular update which will be always performed in Bin64 folder. Doing like this you can have full history of DewesoftX versions like on the image below.

To run particular version you will open Bin64 folder and run DEWEsoft.exe.

I hope this helps.

One more thing.

Allowing multiple DewesoftX version is not possible and this will not change in the future.

However you can have three different versions installed.

If you install them all please be aware that you name the folders differently.

Hi,

Thanks for the quick reply, Matic. But please help me understand the benefit of copying the bin folder if it is not allowed to have multiple versions installed simultaneously? Is it easier to revert back to a previous release if one were to delete the newest DewesoftX bin64-folder? Or what do you mean by "allowing multiple DewesoftX version is not possible", do you mean several instances simultaneously as you also write "To run particular version you will open Bin64 folder and run DEWEsoft.exe."?

I should add that I'm not interested in running several instances of DewesoftX on the same computer, just being able to open one version at a time.

I've seen that I can have the release candidate installed, but I'm more looking to official releases.

Dear Benjamin,

Every installation set the registries to the OS to working properly. Having multiple versions is therefore not a very common way in Windows environments

.

If you only make copy Bin folder you will not touch any registries. The registries will keep the same entries from the very last version which will be in Bin64.

The idea is simple. Let's say that a new DewesoftX version is released and you want to test it out. The steps will be the following

  • make a copy of Bin64
  • name that folder Bin64 2024.1 RELEASE-240311
  • Open DewesoftX that is in Bin64 and perform "Check for updates"
  • When the update is done you will have the recent DewesoftX version in Bin64 folder (2024.2 RELEASE-240426)
  • Test the newest 2024. version
  • If you're not happy with the version you can easily revert back to 2024.1
  • Open DewesoftX installation folder, and open "Bin64 2024.1 RELEASE-240311", and run DEWEsoft.exe
  • Another advantage is that all project files and System folder remain the same

The abovementioned procedure has nothing to do with running multiple instances, but only having all the "old" DewersoftX versions in the same PC so you can run them anytime.

For demonstration purposes we can have a call if you want. Just write to us to [email protected]

Hi,

Thanks for the clarifications! It seems that is exactly what I want to achieve, so probably just a misunderstanding above. Will try it out at the next release.
